Paintings of the Southwest Boxed Note Cards

The light, the colors, the dramatic skies of the Southwest have long attracted artists from around the world. The four painters represented in this note card assortment all came to New Mexico from New York in the early 1900s.

Known for his tranquil impressionist landscapes, Sheldon Parsons (1866–1943) arrived in 1913 and became the first curator of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1918. Leon Kroll (1884–1974) visited the area in 1917, joining other New Yorkers on plein air painting explorations. Andrew Michael Dasburg (1887–1979) first visited Santa Fe in 1918. A great admirer of the geometric landscapes of Cézanne, he found the Southwest’s majestic topography to be endlessly inspiring. Jozef Bakos (1891–1977) moved to Santa Fe in 1920 and co-founded Los Cinco Pintores (The Five Painters), an early and influential group of Southwest modernists.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe, holds an incomparable collection of works by these artists and others who have been irresistibly drawn to the Southwest’s enchanting beauty.
